Stavros Sifakis, MD, PhD

Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit, University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece until May 2014. Currently in private praxis at the Mitera Hospital in Heraklion, Crete, and Scientific Director of the Hospital. Trained for three years in Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Medicine at the University of Connecticut, CT, USA, and at the Kings’ College Hospital, London, UK. He has published 150 research articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has participated with more than 450 presentations in medical congresses. Author in various English- and Greek-language medical books. President of the Hellenic Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Member of the board of Hellenic Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Ex-President of the Board of Hellenic Society in Perinatal Medicine. His research has been awarded several times, and is focused on the underlying mechanisms of gynecological cancer, the aetiopathogenesis of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, the antenatal diagnosis of rare genetic syndromes, and the non-invasive prenatal diagnosis by the use of free fetal DNA and fetal cells in the maternal circulation and the endocervical canal.
